26-28th January
Saturday morning was environmental day. It is a kind of curfew when everyone is supposed to stay at home and clean around their house - a kind of enforced "Dugnad" [
Norwegian]. Because of this, Erik and Daniel's first baseball match did not start until 11am. Daniel found it too hot to be out on the field and preferred to be on the big toy. Erik enjoyed it, though.

In the afternoon Erik and I had the Scout Pinewood Derby car-building event. Chevron had opened up their woodworking shop and brought in two of their carpenters to use the band saw and sanding machines. Each of the boys had a kit consisting of a block of pine wood, 4 nails and 4 wheels. They had to select a template to draw around (or design their own) and give it to the carpenters for them to cut it out. Then they had to sand it down ready for painting. I made one for Daniel, too. The race itself will be on 17th February and we will paint the cars and put the wheels on the weekend before. This is for kids, right...!

The following day we were round at Chevron again to go by coach to a Chevron beach house. While we were waiting for the coach we had coffee and champagne at Peter & Paula's house (decadence). The coach ride took an hour or so, continuing out along the long length of Victoria Island. When we got to the beach, the coach had to make its way along a sandy dirt-track behind the beach. The palm fronds that had been placed over the worst bits the previous weekend had mysteriously disappeared! Sunday is pay day at the beach! Needless to say there were plenty of villagers to help push the coach out of the sand.

Everyone had brought sausages to barbecue and something to go with it, so it was a nice pot-pourri. The children had other children to play with which was nice. They all had life jackets on and we spent most of the time in the surf, which was much less powerful than it had been last time we were at the beach. On the way back we all got into the bus, the driver put his foot down and veered through the the palm trees back to the main road.

On the way back I got a craving for a Margarita, so we stopped at the American GQ (again!) for dinner and a little aperitif. Boy did it taste good!
