Just come back from a do at the British Deputy High Commissioner's residence - promotion of British oil & gas service companies. I was quite impressed by the performance. We were introduced and our business cards taken for some databse or other. Then after half an hour or so the deputy high commissioner made his introduction: first a minutes silence for the 5 generals who have recently been killed in an air crash, then a speech about the Nigerian oil and gas ambitions, the state of the conflict in the Niger Delta, British Companies coming here to do business and earn money against the odds. It was real Aces High Churchillian stuff.
Lots of mingling with the oil & gas crowd. Lots of G&Ts. I went over to speak to a guy from British Gas (BG as they are known now) - who turned out not to be worth speaking to after all - and the Nigerian he was speaking to says "Don't i know you from somewhere?". Someone else had just said the same thing to me, so I just made somoe sort of joke. Then he says - KWC?? [i.e. King William's College]..... It turns out it was Yomi Audifferen, who went to Walters House at the same time I was at King Bill's. He left in 1982, 3 years before me. What are the odds of bumping into an OKW [KWC old boy] after 1 month in a city of more than 12 million people, half way around the world from the Isle of Man??
Apparently Ben Okwo and Bashir Dankaro, who were in Colbourne House together with me (in the year below and year above respectively) are also in Lagos. I'm meeting Yomi for lunch later this week/ next week.
SMALL WORLD!!
