Aquila Game Reserve
We drove 2 hrs north of Cape Town to a private game reserve called Aquila, where we spent the night. The cabins where we stayed were by a small lake just outside the perimeter of the camp... in the wild!

That evening we were taken on a safari, but it was too much for Mathilde and she fell asleep in my arms and missed the lions (though I don't think the lions missed her...). The lorries carrying us were pretty old and we broke down with the sun setting at the last stop before heading back. We were by a lake, surrounded by hippos, rhinos and water buffalos. Each time the engine failed to start the heart rate increased a little, I can tell you!

After dinner at the camp, we retired to our beds. We were told to be careful as animals often came to the watering hole during ther night. At 3am I woke up for some reason, and went outside to listen to the night noises and look at the stars. I stood on the balcony for a few minutes and, before going back to bed thought I would look round the corner and check for Hippos. There 10 feet away from me was a water buffalo outside our bedroom window.... retreat...! Back inside, I woke Inger-Lise and we peeked out from behind the curtain at the huge beast on the other side!

The next morning, we woke early and were taken for another safari ride and we also stopped to see the elephants. The game reserve looks after 2 cheetahs and Inger-Lise and I got to stroke them. The boys had to stay outside the wire fence. At Spier, our next stop, we were told that the boys would be able to pet the Cheetahs
